Meet Zali Steggal : Community Independents Evening

We recently held our Community Independent's evening with Zali Steggall, a Federal Member and a Community Independent OG.

If you couldn't make it, don't worry checkout the Youtube video below:

Meet Zali: A Community Independents Evening (youtube.com)

It was a great night at the groovy Miami Marketta, and we kicked it off by asking the audience what they wanted to see in a Federal Member. The standout item was "Honesty, Integrity & Transparency," and the second item was "Care for the Environment."

Tina Jackson introduced us to the amazing work the Community Independents Project is doing to facilitate this democratic movement.

Zali Steggalls then provided us with an inspiring speech about her journey from the Olympics to serving her community as a Federal MP.

Key Highlights

Community-Driven Politics

Zali emphasized that real change starts with the community. She shared how local engagement is crucial to reshaping Australia’s political landscape, stating:
"We did it, and you can absolutely do it too. It starts with nights like tonight, powered by events that you’re going to keep having."

You are part of an historic disruption... Community first, then candidate."

Integrity and Transparency

Zali highlighted the importance of honesty and integrity in politics, noting that these are core values for all voters, not just partisan issues.

"Integrity and accountability were pushed by the crossbench... It was the pressure that brought about the National Anti-Corruption Commission."

"Honesty, integrity, and transparency are not left or right issues; they are core to all voters."

Climate Action and Long-Term Policy

Zali spoke passionately about the need for sustained, fact-based climate action, emphasizing that communities must lead the push for change:

"We need policy stability and long-term policy so we can make the investments necessary for our future."

"The community must push for climate action because the major parties are reluctant."
.

Audience Questions and Answers

Zali was interviewed by McPherson Independent's own Briony Benjamin, where Zali addressed the top 4 audience questions.

Q: How important was name recognition in your campaign? Is it possible to launch a candidate without such a high profile?

Zali: "While my background in sports helped, name recognition isn’t everything. What truly matters is building a tribe and having community support. Focus on clear messaging and professionalism, and you'll connect with voters."

Q: What tips do you have for changing hearts and minds in conservative areas like the Gold Coast?

Zali: "The key is to focus on common values like honesty and integrity—issues that matter to everyone, regardless of political affiliation. Be fact-based and listen to the community's concerns, especially around local issues."

Q: What was the key to your success in winning a safe seat, and how can other electorates replicate this?

Zali: "It’s all about a community-driven approach. We ran a positive, purposeful campaign and showed that being a ‘safe seat’ doesn’t benefit the electorate. People wanted a representative who would listen to them."

Q: What advice do you have for someone considering running as an independent?

Zali: "Build a strong community support base first. You don’t need to be a political insider to make a difference. Stay disciplined and run your campaign like a small business—keep it professional, organized, and community-focused."

Community Independents

It was wonderful hosting this event with the other Gold Coast community independents: Voices of Moncrief and Voices of Fadden.

We want to thank the amazing team at Miami Marketta for helping put on this wonderful evening.
